People who live behind a red door are the happiest in the country, it has been revealed.
The study quizzed 2,000 residents about all aspects of their personal and working lives to reveal who had the best outlook on life and how their choice of door colour reflected this.
And over half of the study was convinced that the front door colour gives a lot away about its owner and the type of person they are.
Researchers found red front door owners are the biggest extroverts and are more relaxed in their approach to life.
Those with scarlet coloured doors are also the happiest generally, with white, green and brown all colours of the people who were most content in life.
A spokesman for paint and wallpaper specialist Farrow & Ball, which commissioned the research to launch their Great Outdoors competition to find the world’s best exterior door, said: ‘’A front door is the first thing you see when you are approaching someone’s house and can tell you a lot about the home and its owner.
‘’It shows that colour can say so much about our personality and the front door can be seen as an indication of the type of person we are.
‘’The research indicates that Brits are perhaps subconsciously painting their front doors to reflect a particular mood or personality.
‘’A happier or more outgoing person seems more likely drawn to red, while green has marks of intelligence or sophistication.’’
The study also revealed that black front door owners are the most successful in their careers, while those with purple doors are the most sociable and the most likely to have a group of very close friends.
And a pink front door is the choice for those who are daring, and who also have the most friends.
While going for the orange or terracotta look might not do much for your working life, it was the colour chosen by people who were happiest in their relationship.
People living behind a green door are the most trustworthy, while pinks are full of mischief.
A purple door is likely to house a bubbly and chatty owner, while the colour green is more likely to mean a person of intelligence and sophistication than any other colour.
People with green doors consider themselves to be the best neighbours, but despite earning the most money, it’s yellows that come out as both the loudest and most likely to admit to being a bad neighbour.
Researchers also found that a scruffy front door would give 70 per cent of Brits a bad first impression of a house, and even put them off if they were looking around a property with a view to buying it.
And a massive nine in ten people said that the front door was crucial in making a house look inviting.
If given the chance to change the colour of the door to number 10 Downing St, Brits would like to see it painted red.
But more than a third chose the colour of their front door because they thought it reflected their personality, with many seeing the front door as one of the first things people notice when approaching the house.
The Farrow & Ball spokesman said: ‘’It’s clear from the survey that first impressions count and that having a beautifully decorated door in a carefully selected colour is important.
‘’That’s why we’re launching our search for the world’s best exterior door.
‘’We’re asking people to upload pictures of their painted front doors to be in with a chance of winning prizes worth over £5,000. From the front doors of homes, to sheds, garages, summer houses or even beach-huts, we can't wait to be wowed by the entries.’’
