The average bed will be the scene of 720 arguments, 3,640 cuddles and 240 books read, a study has revealed. Researchers found that a bed is no longer used just for sleeping, with the report revealing that we now watch TV, check our social network profiles and even respond to work emails while relaxing under the duvet.
The typical bed is also home to 4,160 kisses with a partner, 480 sex sessions and 120 breakfasts in bed.
Jacqueline Townson, spokesperson for the heated bedding company, Dreamland, said:
''We spend a lot of time in our beds. It's quite staggering to realise all of the different activities we get up to under our duvets.
''It seems that our beds are no longer reserved for sleeping, with Brits now using them as somewhere to relax, watch TV, read a book or even catch up on their emails, phone calls and social networking.
''But with such a large amount of time spent under the covers, it's inevitable that it's going to be the setting for one or two disagreements between couples.
''Sharing a bed can be a nightmare for some, especially in the winter months with many rows occurring because of someone's cold feet or one person hogging the duvet on their side of the bed.''
The study found that our beds will witness six arguments every month, or 720 over its lifetime- half of those will be rows about someone hogging the duvet.
Other arguments include someone snoring, one of you being too hot or cold, someone's cold feet touching the other or one person wanting to watch TV while the other wants to go to sleep.
The study of 2,000 Brits found that over the average ten-year lifetime of a bed, we will spend the equivalent of almost three and a half years - 8 hours and 15 minutes a night - lying or relaxing in bed.
Only two years and eight months of that - six and a half hours a night - is actually spent sleeping.
A further two hours and 12 minutes each week - almost 48 days over the ten years - is taken up with watching TV or DVDs.
Brits will also enjoy 3,640 cuddles with their partner or children, and have their youngsters join them under the covers three nights every month - or 360 months over the bed's lifetime.
Researchers also found that our beds are no longer a place where we switch off, with the average adult sending 14,600 text messages over the ten-year lifetime.
On top of that, they will spend 38 hours and 50 minutes talking on the phone and just over 70 days checking social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, sending 4,160 emails and 3,650 tweets.
Six out of ten Brits even admitted they would like to spend more time in bed than they already do.
The study also revealed that with the cold winter months approaching, instead of turning the heating on, Brits are going to head to bed 28 minutes earlier to warm up under the covers.
And 19% are going to take their duvet into the living room to snuggle under on the sofa.
Jacqui Townson added:
''With luxury heated throws, heated duvets and intelligent heated blankets that can keep you warm for as little as 1p per night, it is no wonder that people are turning to alternative ways to stay toasty as heating bills continue to rise.''
