Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon has been hailed as the greatest moment in television history. The dark, grainy footage, showing the US astronaut stepping onto the lunar surface whilst declaring: 'One small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind', was beamed around the world on July 21, 1969.
England's famous 1966 World Cup victory over West Germany was second, with Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech coming third.
Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation was fourth and Jayne Torvil & Christopher Dean winning gold at the Winter Sarajevo Olympics was fifth.
The poll of 2,000 people was commissioned by Toshiba UK to mark the launch of its new Ultra High Definition 9 Series TV.
Senior marketing manager Tarek Boudour said:
"It is interesting to see from our research which broadcast moments the nation values most - from famous speeches to winning goals, we are all keen to re-live these culturally-relevant historical events again in better quality."
