A man continues to smoke in Millennium Square in the centre of Bristol, which has become the first voluntary no smoking zone in the UK. Bristol today, February 2 2015, becomes the first city in the UK to ban smoking in some outdoor public places. It is a bold move which will most likely be met with both support and opposition. For years Bristol has built up a reputation as being one of the most progressive and healthiest cities to live in the country. And now the city is tackling the controversial agenda of smoking in public spaces. From today a voluntary smoking ban is being trialled at two of the city's busy outdoor spaces. Both Millennium and Anchor Squares at the Harbourside will become smoke-free. But it will be up to each individual bar and restaurant situated in these areas if they comply with the pilot project.
