A survey conducted by Best Offers Bingo has revealed that the nation’s favourite Christmas song is Fairytale of New York by The Pogues.
The survey asked ‘What is your favourite Christmas song?’ to over 2500 participants. The Pogues gained 26% of the vote with 641 for their 1987 Christmas hit Fairytale of New York, making it the UK’s favourite Christmas song. Fairytale of New York was written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan and featured vocals from singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl.
The second favourite Christmas song as voted for by 258 of the survey participants was Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade. This single reached the number one spot in 1973 and stayed in the charts until February 1974.
Taking the top three position is Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You that received 235 votes. This track was written and produced by Mariah Carey along with composer Walter Afanasieff and was released in 1994.
