Couples trying for a baby have sex an average of 78 times before falling pregnant, a study reveals.
Typically, it takes a total of 185 days from deciding to conceive to getting a positive pregnancy test –the equivalent to six months and three days.
It also emerged couples have sex 13 times each month whilst attempting to make a baby, according to parenting site ChannelMum.com.
The most popular position to conceive is the Missionary, which is used by three quarters of couples.
The second best baby-making position is Doggy Style, adopted by 36 per cent of people, and the Eagle – where the woman lies flat while the man kneels up and holds her legs up high - came third.
The study of 1,194 parents showed half of couples admitted they made love much more frequently than normal in their bid to have a baby.
An energetic 10 per cent cosied up 15 to 20 times each month while one in 20 couples romped almost daily - managing 21 to 25 times.
A further five per cent said they had sex just once each month but still managed to fall pregnant.
And while over a third of women and 51 per cent of men said they ‘loved’ having more sex, 18 per cent confided sex in a bid to conceive became a chore rather than a pleasure.
Another 43 per cent felt under pressure in case they didn’t fall pregnant.
The poll revealed it is women who take the lead in the bedroom when trying to conceive, with two in five admitting they initiated sex more frequently, and13 per cent investing in sexy lingerie to get their partner in the mood.
One in 16 women even booked a special ‘baby-making holiday’ or weekend break.
Half of women tried to time sex to fertile days, while 39 per cent improved their diet and took extra vitamins.
But five per cent used more unorthodox methods including fertility spells and gender prediction calendars.
The study also showed just under a third of couples fell pregnant in the very first month, and a fifth took between a year and three years.
Siobhan Freegard, founder of ChannelMum.com said: “Far from being an unlucky number, 13 seems to be the lucky number couples need each month to fall pregnant.
“But while trying to conceive can be fun, it is also hard work, stressful and not every couple is lucky enough to get conceive, so while you’re focused on the baby, try to remember about each other too.”
