Flying cars are still a sci-fi fantasy, but our vehicles may sound like spaceships sooner than we think.
The familiar chug of a car’s engine on the street could be replaced by a futuristic thrum ripped straight out of science fiction.
The intriguing noise, dubbed ’Canto’, will be the sonic indicator in all of Nissan’s future electrified vehicles, and was unveiled to the public at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.
‘Canto’ is derived from Latin for ‘I sing’, and seems an appropriate moniker for the new sound given its unusual melodic qualities.
Tonally, the sound will vary depending on whether the vehicle is accelerating, decelerating or backing up.
A spokesperson from Nissan said: “‘Canto’ has been developed to help with pedestrian safety, as well as to provide a distinct Nissan sound – one that is energizing and confident, authentic to our brand and representing our unique position in the electrified marketplace.”
Nissan designed the sound to enrich the aural environment of the typical city street. The level of the sound will be clearly audible, without being overly disturbing to pedestrians, residents and passengers.
