Millions of adults have never gone wild swimming, been winter camping – or watched the sunset, according to research.
A poll of 2,000 adults revealed other common outdoor activities many haven’t tried included skimming stones on a lake or sledging in the snow.
While 79 per cent have never been outdoor ice skating, and the same percentage haven’t had the pleasure of skiing or snowboarding.
Trail running, hiking and stargazing are also among the nature-based activities many are yet to try their hand at.
It also emerged a third of adults (33 per cent) admitted they basically ‘hibernate’ in winter.
The study was commissioned by the first-ever non-alcoholic beer sponsor of the Olympic Winter Games, Corona Cero, as it launches ‘Dear Nature’, a poetic ode to nature [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAUyySNwEOQ].
In partnership with skeleton double gold-medallist Lizzy Yarnold, and British Olympians Matt Weston, Billy Major and Katie Ormerod, the video invites communities to come out of hibernation and disconnect from the monotonous routine many fall into in winter.
Lizzy Yarnold, said, “Nature has been by my side throughout my life as an athlete, from when I first stood on a snowy slope as a little girl to standing on top of the Olympic podium.
“I hope this film acts as inspiration to the whole nation to step outside and embrace nature in the same way that the Team will in Milano-Cortina this winter.”
The study also found that despite a reluctance to get outside, 30 per cent end up feeling refreshed when they do venture out into nature during winter - and 15 per cent more relaxed.
While 43 per cent reckon simply leaving the house is more effort than it’s worth during winter, according to the OnePoll.com figures.
It also emerged most don’t like seeing clouds or rain in these months, with 37 per cent saying the ‘perfect’ winter weather features blue skies and a crisp feel.
When people do go out in the cold, they’re most likely to go for a walk around their local neighbourhood or park (29 per cent).
The next most popular ways of getting out were to explore local woodlands (18 per cent), or head to the coast (10 per cent).
Spokesperson for Corona Cero, Jessica McGeorge-Stevens, said: “As a brand born in nature, Corona exists to remind us our best lives are lived outside, whether that’s on the beach or in the mountains, but we are spending more of our time inside than ever before.
“Through ‘Dear Nature,’ we are heroing our athletes' unique relationship with the outdoors to inspire the nation to come out of hibernation and celebrate every golden moment regardless of the season”.
