The average British adult will eat half a ton of cereal and drink 1,267 litres of milk for breakfast during the course of their lifetime, according to a new study.
Researchers polled 2,000 people and found cereal is the preferred option for the first meal of the day, with people consuming at least four bowls a week.
Assuming each bowl is a minimum of 40 grams of cereal – usually porridge, cornflakes or Weetabix – that’s a whopping 8,320 grams consumed a year and 501 kilograms over the average adult’s lifetime of 60 years.
And people are pouring 404 millilitres of milk over their cereal every week, which works out to be 21,008ml a year or 278.6526444 gallons over six decades.
But the study found that the average person skips breakfast at least one day a week – with 28 per cent claiming they get up late and 24 per cent having to leave for work early.
The poll shows Brits spend just under 11 minutes eating breakfast on a weekday, and over 14 minutes on a weekend – that’s 225,763 minutes or 6,762 hours over a lifetime.
Six in 10 people always have breakfast at the dinner table at home, but 11 per cent regularly eat in the workplace and one in 20 will go to the work canteen or kitchen.
A spokesman for online casino Casumo.com, which carried out the study, said: “Most people tend to have the same breakfasts day in, day out, which can be a little repetitive.
“And something like porridge can definitely become samey if you don’t try and mix it up and create a bit of excitement with your breakfast.”
The poll found people will eat toast for two days out of the six they enjoy a breakfast at home.
This means that over the adult lifetime of 60 years they’ll work their way through a staggering 12,542 slices of bread, and the same number of butter knobs.
Assuming there are 20 slices in the average medium cut loaf, this means the average person is putting away 627 loaves in total.
In addition to the toast and cereal, Brits reckon they eat one banana a week – which equates to more than 3,135 over their lifetime.
And breakfast would not be complete without a cup of tea or coffee, with people drinking at least one cup a day.
That’s the equivalent of 6.5million millilitres of caffeine or 1.4 gallons over a lifetime, assuming the average mug is 350ml.
A lucky four per cent usually have breakfast in bed.
Researchers found six in 10 Brits still consider the traditional fry up to be the biggest breakfast treat – and are most likely to eat it on a Sunday.
Poached eggs are best enjoyed on a Saturday as is the classic bacon sandwich.
But four in 10 people find breakfast boring, and 11 per cent would prefer to skip the first meal of the day in favour for 10 minutes extra in bed.
Some folk like to mix it up in the morning – with a fifth eating pizza from the night before, 17 per cent opting for a chocolate bar, and 16 per cent reaching for leftovers from a Chinese takeaway.
The Casumo spokesman added: “We love the idea of people eating leftover pizza for breakfast – purely from a lifestyle point of view.
“It may not be the healthiest of breakfasts, but it shows that people have the attitude of doing whatever pleases them the most.”

BREAKDOWN OF FINDINGS
Average person eats breakfast six days a week;
* Four days of cereal – 40g each = 160g cereal a week. 160g x 52 weeks = 8,320g a year
Average adult lifetime of 60.3 years x 8,320g = 501,696g / 501.69kg – more than half a ton / 79stone.
* Four bowls of cereal = 4 x 52 = 208 bowls a year 208 x 60.3 = 12,542.40 bowls.
101 millilitres of semi skimmed milk x 4 bowls – 404 millilitres a week. 404 x 52 = 21,008ml a year 60 years x 21,008ml = 1.260,480ml – 1,266.78 litres = 278.6526444 gallons.
* Two days toast – 2 slices of toast = 4 slices of toast a week. 4 x 52 = 208 slices a year 208 x 60.3 = 12,542.40 slices.
* Two knobs of butter = 4 knobs of butter a week. 4 x 52 = 208 knobs a year 208 x 60.3 = 12,542.40 knobs.
* One banana a week = 52 a year 52 x 60.3 = 3,135.60 bananas.
* Six cups of tea or coffee each morning x 350ml = 2100ml a week. 2100 x 52 = 109,200ml a year. 109,200ml x 60.3 = 6,584,760ml.
* 11 minutes eating breakfast a day - x4 week days = 44 minutes x 52 weeks = 2288 minutes a year 14 minutes eating breakfast a weekend day – x 2 days = 28 minutes x 52 weeks = 1456 minutes a year
