The average British adult will spend a total of 416 days of their life in the bathroom.
Researchers found they will spend the time showering, bathing, moisturising, shaving and even catching up on emails and reading their favourite books.
Men will spend 373 days using the facilities at home on average – that’s around 23 minutes a day – and women will use them for a total of 456 days – typically for 29 minutes a day.
It also emerged they’ll spend around three months of their lives getting ready for work.
The research of 2,000 UK adults was commissioned by B&Q to launch its new GoodHome bathrooms range.
Christopher Webb, bathroom category manager at B&Q, said: “While it isn’t the biggest room in the house, it’s clear that we still expect our bathrooms to work incredibly hard.
"Our new research shows 30 per cent of us are dissatisfied with how our bathrooms work for us, yet the average Brit hasn’t spruced up their bathroom in five years.
The research also found seven in 10 Brits find sharing a bathroom ‘frustrating’.
One third said the top annoyance is finding the last of the toilet roll hasn’t been replaced and a fifth can’t stand finding hair left down the plug hole.
Seventeen per cent get frustrated with other members of their household hogging the room.
Husbands and boyfriends were found to cause the most frustrations according to 29 per cent.
And perhaps they just want to get away from everyone - one in six of everyone polled revealed they have hidden in the bathroom – to get some ‘peace and quiet’.
The most in demand time for the bathroom was revealed as 8am as families and households face the morning rush.
Despite frustrations, the bathroom is also the place where many important life moments are experienced, including a pep talk in the mirror (10 per cent), the odd argument (10 per cent) and having a heart to heart (8 per cent).
Those polled also recalled precious parenting milestones such as baby’s first bath (19 per cent), potty training (15 per cent), teaching teenage children how to shave (three per cent) and even giving birth (1.4 per cent).
More than half of those polled believe having a great bathroom is ‘key’ to feeling happy in their home.
And for 51 per cent, renovating the bathroom has tangibly improved their overall happiness with their house and almost a third of Brits saying that updating their bathroom would be more impactful on their home happiness than any other home improvement project.
Webb added: ''We believe that everyone should have a home to feel proud of and B&Q’s new GoodHome bathroom range is designed to simplify bathroom renovations.
"The range includes a number of simple, innovative and sustainable products at great value prices meaning whether its extra storage or easier cleaning, B&Q has customers’ bathroom essentials covered.''
